Meet the Nomic Team  - Agost Biro, Software Engineer on EDR

Meet Agost - a software engineer on the EDR (Hardhat's runtime) team!

What is your name, and what do you do at Nomic?

My name is Agost Biro and I’m senior software engineer on the Ethereum Development Runtime team. My work is focused on providing fast, realistic and observable smart contract development environment for Ethereum developers. I mostly work with Rust and sometimes with TypeScript.

Who are you outside of work? What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to read (especially poetry), go running or just be outside. I study cryptography as a hobby. My goal in life is to be able stop thinking at will.

What were you doing professionally before joining Nomic?

I’ve worked on machine learning, computer graphics and cloud infrastructure during my career with full stack development sprinkled in-between. My first project in crypto as a contributor was an attempt to bring Passkey-like security and convenience to Ethereum externally owned accounts.

Why did you decide to join the team?

I saw the challenges around EVM simulation in a previous project first-hand, so I found the challenges exciting. The ability to contribute to Ethereum’s mission while working on an open source project in my favorite programming language made joining Nomic an ideal choice.

What’s your story behind getting into crypto/blockchain/decentralized tech?

I’ve dabbled in the space for a long time, but the first time it really clicked for me was when I saw an implementation of D&D character classes as an ERC-721 contract a few years ago. As a programmer and and old MMO player, it completely blew my mind that you could have an open, composable data schema hosted on a decentralized stack that any programmer could tinker with and players could transfer their characters between games freely. It made me realize that once we get scalability, confidentiality and UX right, applications built on top of a decentralized stack will eat the traditional web stack, because the decentralized stack will have better apps due to stronger competition (Minecraft vs Roblox is a good way to think about this). Even with the recent advances in machine learning, it was no question after that what I wanted to work on.

What are the things that you enjoy and appreciate about working at Nomic?

I originally joined Nomic for the tech, but the best thing about Nomic turned out to be the people.

What did you learn about Nomic during your first weeks?

That everybody genuinely loves team retreats. I can confirm this since I’ve attended one.

What are you excited about when you think about your future at Nomic?

I’m excited to tackle the technical challenges on our roadmap and to work with interesting cryptographic primitives that are being adopted in the Ethereum ecosystem.
